Small things guests notice, and what not to buy

By Athina · October 2026

A missing socket by the bed costs more stars than you'd think. Where to spend a little, and where to save.

Guests rarely lose their enthusiasm over something big. It's usually the small things: the phone charging in the hallway all night, no hook in the shower, sunlight at half past five in the morning.

Small things that make a difference

  • A socket or extension cord next to every bed.
  • Blackout curtains in the bedrooms.
  • A hook or shelf in the shower.
  • An extra blanket in the wardrobe.
  • An umbrella by the door.
  • The wifi password where guests can see it.

What you can often skip

  • Lots of decorative cushions: guests put them on the floor, and they need rearranging after every stay.
  • A coffee machine that only takes one brand of capsules.
  • A white sofa.
  • Decoration that collects dust and adds cleaning time to every changeover.

Where the money goes better

One good mattress, because that is what guests spend eight hours on. Then solid wifi, good curtains and enough towels. A rental home is not a showroom: it has to look cared for in photos and hold up after many guests.
