From 20 November 2026, Airbnb limits the chores hosts can ask of guests. What is no longer allowed, and what still is.
Airbnb announced new house rules in October 2026. The policy takes effect on 20 November 2026. The idea, in Airbnb's words: most guests want to avoid unexpected chores, and cleaner-type tasks can hurt both the stay and the review.
No longer allowed to require
- Washing and putting away the dishes.
- Stripping the beds or starting the laundry.
- Taking the rubbish off the property.
- Not using a listed amenity, such as the air conditioning.
Still fine to ask
- Putting used dishes in the sink.
- Gathering used towels.
- Sorting rubbish and recycling into the indoor bins.
- Switching off the air conditioning or heating when leaving.
Other changes
- Hosts set standard rules in the listing editor, such as maximum guests, quiet hours, events, pets and smoking.
- All rules have to be in the listing's house rules section, not only in messages or on signs in the home.
- Contracts with guests are only allowed in limited cases.
- Requests that don't comply are flagged, and guests may see an alert on the listing.
What it means for owners
Cleaning becomes fully the host's job, so the cleaning planning and the cleaning fee need to reflect that. With Athina, nothing changes for your guests: our cleaning team already handles the full turnover after every stay.
